The first review for 2017 is going to be the Doodle Pen by the fabulous Dawn Butler of Dinkydoodle Designs.
If your like me and not an expert at piping, this is the tool for you! I had heard that it makes piping so much easier for both experts and novices and has great precision and control. I have to agree that it absolutely does! It's fantastic!
When I first opened the neat little box it came in I was a little afraid of putting the pieces together but I was surprised just how easy it was to assemble. The Doodle Pen comes with 4 different size tips, No1 tip is the smallest and No4 being the largest. It's very easy to change the tip sizes when you are using it.
You can see from the photo there is a cup which sits on top of the Pen. This is where you load your royal icing. It has a spring loaded lid which pushes down on the royal icing when you screw the lid on. You then simply pull back the trigger with minimal pressure and you have a constant flow of icing. When you want to stop the flow just remove pressure from the trigger and it will stop the flow immediately. It is so easy to control!
I have zero experience with piping but I wanted to show you I made this little plaque in the photo below for a test in about 5 minutes. This was my first attempt at piping a little lattice pattern. It's 7cm by 4cm. It's by no means perfect but with practice I think this Pen is going to be amazing!!
You can use other mediums such as Cake Lace, chocolate and piping gel, I think anything you like as long as it's edible! It does state with the Pen that you can use non edible mediums but you shouldn't then use it for edibles once you've done this.
I thought cleaning the Pen would be a chore but I was wrong again, it was easy! I absolutely love this little tool and think I will get a lot of use from it.
Dawn Butler has made some fabulous videos on You Tube on how to se it up, how to use the Pen and how to clean it, so you just can't go wrong! It's amazing!
Finally I wanted to show you this beautiful Bauble cake done by the very talented Julia Bend of Premierbakes. She has used the Doodle Pen to create this gorgeous scroll design. A stunning example I think!!!
You can buy the Doodle Pen from the Cake Decorating Company for £69.98 or on Amazon If you have any questions please feel free to ask in the comments below and if you buy one please tell us how you get on!!
