Chocolate fudge mud cake recipe

Thank you to our lovely CakesDecor member Kathy Gain of Cake Mummy for giving us one of her favorite recipes for all of you to try. Australian Mud Cake recipes are some of the best out there so I hope you will give this one a go, they are known to be great cakes for carving and sculpting with.

  • 2 cups Plain Four
  • 3/4 cup hot water
  • 1 1/4 cups butter
  • 230g chocolate (milk, dark or combo) 1/2 butter milk
  • 1/2 cocoa
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 3/4 cups sugar
  • 2 tbs of granulated coffee
  • 2 tbs of oil 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt


  1. Preheat oven to 160°
  2. Prepare an 8"(20cm) cake tin
  3. Heat butter, sugar, chocolate, coffee and water together until chocolate and sugar have melted.
  4. Add oil and vanilla mix well.
  5. Remove from heat and let cool.
  6. Mix eggs into chocolate mixture one at a time mixing well.
  7. Add milk.
  8. Sieve flour, cocoa, soda, baking powder and salt together.
  9. Mix flour mixture and milk and into chocolate mixture alternately, mix until combined.
  10. Pour into prepared tin.
  11. Cook for approx 1 hour 20 mins.
  12. Cake is cooked when skewer inserted into center cake comes out clean. 
  13. Cool in tin.
